Honda Acty
Kei Truck / Van — 1977 to 2021 · HA3 / HA4 most commonly imported
Overview
The Honda Acty — short for “activity” — is a Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) micro-truck and micro-van produced for over four decades. These vehicles were never officially imported into the United States, but thanks to the federal 25-year import rule, US importers have been bringing low-mileage, well-maintained examples into the country and demand continues to grow. When you compare the purchase price and running costs of an Acty to a comparable side-by-side for farm or ranch work, the value proposition is difficult to ignore.
The Acty's engine and transaxle — a combined transmission and rear differential — sit beneath the truck bed, forward of the rear axle. An access panel in the center of the bed provides access for maintenance. The right-hand-drive, 5-speed manual configuration is part of the appeal for many owners; the truck is capable of crawling through rough terrain and cruising comfortably at highway speeds.
Safety
The lack of ABS is particularly important to understand. In a panic stop, all four tires will lock and skid simultaneously, causing a complete loss of steering control. Unless you have significant experience driving non-ABS vehicles at the limit, your stopping distance in an emergency will be significantly longer than in a modern vehicle. Do not tailgate. Give yourself extra following distance at all times.
In terms of overall risk profile, these trucks are best thought of as being similar to a motorcycle — enjoyable and practical, but demanding of respect and awareness. A distracted driver in a larger vehicle can cause a fatal accident that would be a minor fender-bender in a modern car.
Registration
Successful street registration requires at least five documents from Japan, some of which must be translated into English by a certified translator. Additionally, several states do not permit Acty registration for street use at all, so verify with your state DMV before purchasing. The Acty also uses a shorter-than-standard VIN number, which some DMV systems reject outright.
The safest approach is to buy an Acty that is already registered and plated. If you plan to import directly from Japan, work with a licensed customs broker who specializes in Japanese vehicle imports — they will handle the port paperwork and registration documentation correctly. An unregistered, off-road-only Acty should sell for roughly half the price of a registered road-legal example. Do not pay registered-vehicle prices for an unregistered truck.
Commonly Imported Models
| Model | Years | Drive | Engine | Transmission | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HA4 | 1990–1998 | 4WD | 660cc | Manual 4/5-speed only | Most commonly imported. Front disc, rear drum. |
| HA3 | 1990–1998 | 2WD (RWD) | 660cc | Manual or Auto | 1996+ have fuel injection. Front disc, rear drum. |
| HA2 | 1988–1990 | 4WD | 550cc | Manual | Round headlights. Same body as HA3/HA4. |
| HA1 | 1988–1990 | 2WD (RWD) | 550cc | Manual | Round headlights. |
Pre-1988 models use round headlights and a 2-cylinder 550cc motor. Parts for these older trucks are extremely difficult to source and are not recommended for first-time buyers. The 1990–1998 HA3 and HA4 are the sweet spot for parts availability and driveability. Models from 1996 onward gained fuel injection, replacing the carburetor used in earlier trucks.
Basic Info
Jack Points
The factory service manual approves the following jacking locations: the front and rear axle beams, the two metal protrusion points at the extreme front corners of the frame, and the rear leaf spring forward mounts (just forward of the rear wheels). Do not jack from any other location.
Towing
Four-wheel drive Actys should not be towed faster than 25 mph (40 kph) or for extended distances. The tow hook is located below the front bumper, near the license plate mount. Before towing, release the parking brake and put the transmission in neutral. If your truck has the 2WD/4WD selector bolt, engage 2WD mode for towing to reduce wear on the drivetrain.
