Daihatsu Hijet — Transmission & Differentials

Manual transmission, transfer case, and front/rear differential fluid specs and change procedure.

Note:The S110P 4WD has three separate fluid sumps: the manual transmission (which includes the transfer case in its 2.3 L fill), the front differential, and the rear differential. All three should be serviced together on the same interval.

Danger:Never use GL-5 gear oil in the manual gearbox. GL-5's sulfur-phosphorus additives chemically attack the brass synchronizer rings in Daihatsu transmissions, causing grinding and shift failure. GL-4 only.

Tip:Inspect the differential drain plug magnets every service. A small amount of fine metallic fuzz is normal; chunks or a heavy coating of metal particles indicates abnormal wear.

Drain & Fill Procedure

  1. Warm the truck up first — warm fluid drains faster and carries more contaminants out. Park level and shut the engine off.
  2. Always remove the fill plug before the drain plug. If the fill plug is seized you will have no way to refill after draining.
  3. Remove the drain plug and let the old fluid drain fully. Inspect the drain plug magnet for metal particles.
  4. Reinstall the drain plug.
  5. Fill through the fill hole until fluid just begins to weep out at the fill plug threads — this is the correct level.
  6. Reinstall the fill plug. Repeat for front differential and rear differential.
Tip:Use a fluid pump or squeeze bottle with a flexible hose to fill — the fill openings are in tight spots and direct pouring causes spillage.
