Tip:Always replace the cap and rotor together — a dirty or pitted rotor causes erratic spark and hesitation regardless of cap condition. These are inexpensive parts and there is no reason to replace only one.

Replacement Procedure

  1. Before removing the old cap, mark the position of the rotor relative to the distributor body with a paint marker or chalk. This lets you reinstall the cap in the same orientation without disturbing ignition timing.
  2. Remove the two screws holding the cap to the distributor body. Lift the cap off — the spark plug wires can remain attached to the cap if you move it aside carefully.
  3. Pull the rotor straight off the distributor shaft. It is held only by friction.
  4. Push the new rotor firmly onto the shaft. It can only fit in one orientation — do not force it.
  5. Install the new cap, aligning it to your reference mark. Secure the two screws.
  6. Start the engine and verify normal idle. If timing feels off, confirm the cap is oriented correctly to your mark.
Note:If you also plan to check base ignition timing, do so after the new cap and rotor are installed. The EF-NS base timing is 7° BTDC at 950 RPM. See the Engine Specifications page for full timing data.
